You flip through the book quickly. As you do so, the chair starts to rock violently back and forth. The sound of a plethora of metal chains resound throughout the room, though you can't see any. You pass by some pages stamped in red ink, likely library stamps; not important.

As you near the end of the book, you notice the last few pages are blank. As the chair settles down, and the eerie sounds calm, you decide to examine the blank pages in the candlelight for signs of tampering.
The last page is ripped out, but another has some slight scratches on it which look like letters.

After a lot of careful examination, you can make out:
"are you alive? need help. can't leave - glass breaks but no hole. curse? -H"

There's nothing else of interest in the book, aside from the title on the cover: Banned Books, An Anthology: Vol. XIII. An examination of the first few pages yields no further results, nor any evidence of ban-worthy quality, so you rip out a strip of the first page, place it as a bookmark at the hidden message's page, and shut the book, leaving it on the table.
If there is someone else here, they'll know I've read it, you think to yourself.

Given all the commotion with the chair and so on, you decide to return to the hallway with the candle.
